Will Hydrogen Cars Replace Hybrid Cars?

Wouldn't you just know it, just as the Hybrid Car begins to make its presence felt as the saviour of tomorrows motorist (and the world) along comes another young pretender to the throne - The hydrogen fuelled car. Some people say that hydrogen cars will have pure refeshment water on tap. We shall see, in theory it could happen with a Hydrogen Car but they are way behind the Hybrid Car in their development program and forecasting is impossible. Hydrogen cars do however, have the potential to be better cars than Hybrid Cars in several ways so we need to compare their known characteristics.
Hydrogen cars use a chemical reaction rather than a burning process for motive power
Conventional cars burn fossil fuel and Hybrid Cars use smaller amounts of the same fuel to charge their batteries. Hydrogen Cars do not use fossil fuel at all. Instead Hydrogen Cars depend upon a chemical reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen that produces a lot of energy plus pure water residue - a completely pollution free process. Hence the earlier reference to water on tap in Hydrogen cars. It is not possible for Hybrid Cars to achieve the same thing without breaking the Laws of Chemistry.
The reaction process in Hydrogen Cars produces up to three times the energy output from the equivalent gasoline based process in conventional and hybrid cars.
Hydrogen fuel burns both hotter and faster than fossil based fuel and is therefore much more efficient. In theory therefore it should be possible to design Hydrogen Cars that canreach incredible speeds with as yet unrealised acceleration compared to Hybrid Cars. There is simply no way that Hybid Cars, dependent as they are (in all their forms) on battery power, will be able to compete on this level.
The question arises "Is the hydrogen car concept for real?
Many people believe that Hybrid Cars reflect reality much more than Hydrogen Cars do. Hybrid Cars exist on our roads now and have already cut pollution emmissions by some 30% to 50%. Why then do we need to indulge in a possible flight of fancy such as the Hydrogen Car by investing vast sums of money to try to achieve the impossible?
The Hydrogen used in Hydrogen Cars is defined as a fuel carrier. It is not considered to be a fuel source in itself.
Indeed, it is hoped by some proponents of this type of fuel process, that in the future it will be possible to produce hydrogen with the use of such sources as wind power and other renewable energy sources.That means that hydrogen has to be produced from other sources. And people are hoping that hydrogen will be able to be produced from things such as wind power or other types of renewable sources. Right now, it looks like all we have is natural gas. That is the most efficient way to get hydrogen. And if that's the case, then there's no need to make hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars already cut down on how much gas people use. Who needs hydrogen cars that may end up costing us more in natural gas?
It will be hard create a lot of stations to fuel hydrogen cars
People are saying there is an overwhelming amount of challenges when it comes to creating the multitudes of hydrogen fueling stations that would be needed if millions of people suddenly started owning hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars use gas. And we already have gas stations.
But president Bush has made it clear that he wants hydrogen cars to be on the roads in significant numbers by the year 2020. So it seems that those who oppose hydrogen cars might just have to hold their breath and see if hydrogen cars actually live up to the lofty promises people associate with them. If they don't live up to their promises, people will probably start running back to hybrid cars in droves. And that's not too bad. Hybrid cars or hydrogen cars, one of them is going to get us to cleaner air.

Audi is fresh from its domination of the American Le Mans Series but earlier in the year, it was not clear whether the German automaker will participate in the Le Mans Series in Europe.
Recently though, the automaker which has won last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans confirmed that they will be participating at the endurance race series. Audi will once again campaign with its Audi R10 - a diesel powered race car which has dominated the American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Former Formula One driver Allan McNish will once again pilot the Audi R10 along with teammate Dindo Capello. The pair has won last year's American Le Mans Series championship and will be looking to continue their good showing on European soil.
McNish who hails from Scotland is visibly pumped with the chance of winning a title in his home soil. He is also motivated to win the title as it has eluded him time and time again in the past.
"Having now won the American Le Mans Series title three times, I'm delighted to be racing again regularly in Europe," said McNish. "My career began in 1987 and I've come close to championship success in Europe on a couple of occasions only to just miss out."
The Scot said that he last raced in Europe four years ago not counting his appearances in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "I last raced sportscars regularly in Europe in 2004 and started the final race that year leading the championship but missed out."
The R10 has not made an appearance in any endurance race series in Europe. The prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans of course is not included as it only happens once a year. Therefore, McNish is excited with the prospect of competing in European soil on tracks where the R10 has never prowled before.
"I'm really looking forward to racing at places like Monza, Spa and Silverstone again â€" especially for the first time in Audi's pioneering diesel-engined sportscar," said McNish.
Audi is expected to make the R10 more efficient and faster even if it is not equipped with Audi spark plug wires as it is diesel powered. Peugeot will also be entering the competition with a diesel powered racecar. The rivalry between the two is just starting and McNish is aware of this. "We're likely to face very stiff competition in the LMS in terms of possible race and championship glory but Audi always relishes fierce competition as do I," he concluded.

The Audi TT brand has been in production since 1999, but the second model has just been in production for about 2 years now. The Second Generation TT is strongly based on the Volkswagen A5 platform, and has two classes, which consist of a roadster car model and a luxury sport. The original plans for the Audi TT Second Generation were revealed in 2004, then it was first showcased to the public on April 6th, 2006, and it was dubbed by the internal indicator of "Typ 8J". And like its predecessor the First Generation TT, it was praised by critics for its innovative, bold, provocative look and design, which is has been kept traditional with the brand. The ideals of the original unmatched design of the Audi TT both first and second can be heaped upon to its creative designers Freeman Thomas and J Mays of the Volkswagen's California design studio, as well as Martin Smith for the original concept and designing of the prize winning interior.
The prototypical Second Generation TT production car comes standard with the "3.2 litre VR6 engine" that outputs 250PS (247hp or 184kW). But the car has an additional option of Audi's rendition of direct injection engine in the form of the "2.0 litre Turbo I4", also known as the FSI (Fuel Straight/ Stratified Injection) outputting 200PS (197hp or 147kW). The FSI mechanics was obtained from the specially crafted Le Mans racing cars, which resulted in an overall improvement of fuel capabilities, and enhanced power turnover. This technology was imitated, enhanced, and integrated into Audi's format for the 2.0 litre engine. The transmission of the car came with the basic 6 speed manual drive, but has added the alternative of the DSG refined model as well, along with the "quattro all wheel drive" trimmings being standard with the 3.2 litre V6 engine.
The body-style of the original TT has been augmented and matched up to a higher level of elegance, and style, but still supporting the fundamental traits of the First Generation TT. The car is still being offered in the sheik roadster design, and the 2+2 coupe (4-door coupe), in keeping with the tradition for all the inherited lovers of the First Generation TT car. Production of the Audi TT started in 1999, and the car was only known internally within Audi by the name "Typ 8N", but it later became known as the First Generation TT, as a second, improved model of the car was produced and developed from 2006 to present. The TT name came from the famous "NSU TT" small rear engine of the 1960's, and does not mean "Twin Turbo" for the record. The Audi TT was the first presented in a concept car design at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show but it was then decided that it should be established within the coupe class in 1998. J Mays and Freeman Thomas originally designed the car, both of Volkswagen's California design workshop, with Martin Smith designing the bold and innovative interior. And it originated in the class of the 2 door roadster, and the 2 door luxury sportscar, with either a front wheel drive or four wheel drive, and a front positioned engine.
The first thing people noticed about the car was that it obtained a couple of design patterns from earlier vehicles, the complete appearance was thought to be definite and unique. The design appeal of the First Generation TT consisted of a its smooth-curved body, rounded bodywork, the distinctive use bare "anodized aluminum", and no definite show of bumpers, the car was light-years away from the current styling trends that beseeched the market at that time. Despite all of the car's curvaceous outlines, it does not improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle; in fact the "drag coefficient" is actually very high at 0.35. A small number of changes were performed to the TT apperance wise, so it didn't vary much from the showcased concept car, except the addition of finely re-profiled bumpers, and "back quarter-light windows located behind the doors".
The Audi TT foundations were based intensely on the "Volkswagen A4 platform", which came from the "A platform", which was also used in the Volkswagen New Beetle, Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf/ Rabbit, SEAT Leon, and the Skoda Octavia. The proportional blueprint of the TT is made up of a width of 1764mm (69.4in); a length of 4041mm (159.1in); wheel-base of 2422mm (95.4in); and a height of 1346mm (53in). The car also possessed a fuel capacity of 55 litres (14.5 US gal/12.1 imp gal).
The car was initially obtainable with an engine with capacity of "1.8 litre Turbo I4" which consists of a "Turbo-charged inline four cylinder, 20 valve" motor that overturned either "180PS (178hp or 132kW) or 225PS (222hp or 165kW)". The 225PS engine owns a bigger turbo-charger, an extra intercooler located on the driver's side, fabricated connecting rods, and other mechanically internal modifications, all proposed to increase turbo boost from about 10 psi to peak at 15 psi. In 2003, the original layout of the four cylinder range was given a boost with the 3.2 litre VR6 engine, which outputs 250PS (247hp or 184kW). The First Generation TT engines were mounted crosswise, with optional front or "quattro" all wheel drive with the smaller engine, but came standard in the 3.2 litre version. The TT transmission came with 4 different formats; a 5 speed manual; a 6 speed manual; a 6 speed automatic; and the later enhanced 6 speed DSG.
In late 1999, early 2000 the First Generation TT had its load of problems because eyebrows raised as questions grew about the car's poor handling as the tally of fatal accidents piled up. The car was deemed unstable when cornering at high speeds, due to "throttle lift-off oversteering". It was imperative that Audi rectify the situation as quickly as possible by altering the problem by changing the suspension settings to increase under-steer, and adding a rear wing spoiler to lower lift. These changes helped the problem, and gave the car back its reputation.
Sales-wise the First Gen was a huge success, both in commercial and private markets, as the car reached a public, which had not been considered beforehand. The customers that filled the market were mostly, young people and women in particular that bought Audi TTs. There was even a long waiting list for it both in the US and the UK, where it was something of a fashion item. The car was distinguished for it elegant flair and improved offering, as the acclaim were stacked on it as the car was highlighted in the sought after "Car and Driver" magazine's distinguished "Ten Best List" for both 2000 and 2001. In addition, it was also nominated for the "North American Car of the Year".

The said ad utilizes a send-up iconic scene from The Godfather to poke fun, without naming names, at luxury auto rivals, reported USA Today."We don't look at this as a car ad as much as we look at it as a statement," said Scott Keogh, Audi's vice president of marketing. "The message we want to send is between Old World and New World and say that Audi is the New World. The spot sets up old luxury as excessive extravagance. Audi is not about excess, it's about substance."The German automaker will be competing with several rivals in the auto industry for attention in the game. General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and Hyundai Motors are in the game. Additionally, Nissan Motor Corp. and other automakers are acquiring 'spot' ads in individual markets.Venables Bell & Partners in San Francisco, the advertising company behind Audi's ad, took that into account. In many parts of the world Audi is by far taking the lead from its top class competitors like Mercedes Benz and BMW. The 2008 Audi A8 is definitely in a different league and goes above any traditional luxury. This car has been upgraded from the A8 that was first brought out back in 1994. It was then the first car in the world to have been built on an aluminum platform, known as the Audi Space Frame (ASF). The A8 for 2008 has been updated to improve the suspension of the vehicle, the soundproofing, the steering as well as technology offering of the flagship model.
There are four different versions available in the Audi A8 model. It is available in A8, A8 L, A8 L W12 and then there is the S8. All of these models have the same chassis except for any of the "L" models as they have an extra 5-inch wheelbase, which results in passengers in the rear gaining extra room.

All these A8 models have been built with ASF. The use of the old steel chassis is now being replaced by the use of hybrid-welded laser-MIG aluminum. It is used for the castings, the panels and the profiles. With the car being built in aluminum, the Audi A8 model is now as much as several hundred pounds lighter than it would be if constructed in steel. By using the ASF the A8 has got a chassis more rigid than before, the vehicle handling is better, the crash performance has improved and to top it off the fuel economy is far better.
For the 2008 models there is a choice of three different engines. The Audi A8 and the A8 L both have a 4.2 liter V8 engine with 325 lb. Ft. of torque and 350 hp. The Audi A8 L W12 has a 6 liter W12 engine with 420 hp and 428 lb. Ft. of torque. All the Audi A8 models come standard with the Audi quattro's four wheel drive and include the automatic transmission which is a 6 speed Tiptronic that have both Sport Program and DSP features.
The Air Suspension is Audi's very own design and it balances the comfort of the ride with great sporty handling. This system uses air sprung struts that are controlled by electromagnetic valves that adjust each shock absorber. It is left up to the driver to either leave it in total automatic mode or he can select one of four suspension settings for different ride heights.
Technology of this vehicle
Audi has added "side assist". This is a system based on radar that monitors any blind spots and will let the driver know if there is any other traffic near.
The "lane assist" will let the driver know if the vehicle is moving from the lane without him realizing. The driver is warned by the steering wheel vibrating.
You can't go wrong with the entertainment system in the 2008 A8. It comes standard with a BOSE surround sound 12 speaker system with a satellite radio that is capable of WMA/MP3 playback. Or you can go for the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system that has a 6 disc CD changer.
Safety Features
Both driver and passenger are protected by front and knee air bags. There are air bags mounted on the sides for additional protection that are fitted both for front and rear passengers. There is Tethers and Lower Anchorage so the Children are safe, this feature is standard in the A8 model, and so is the monitoring system of the tire pressure. The vehicle also comes equipped with an anti-theft alarm system.

The cost of the 2008 Audi A8 models range from $70,680 to $120,100.

Performance and Powertrain:
Of the 2 engines available on the Audi A4, the 2.0 liter is turbocharged and in line for producing more than 200 horsepower with 207 pounds per feet of torque. The second option is a 3.1 liter V6 engine that can generate up to 255 horsepower, with 243 pounds per feet of torque.

The 2008 Audi RS4 has been highly anticipated by car enthusiasts all over the world. The fuss started with the 2007 version of the car. People in the states were told that the only body type available to them would be the sedan even though Europeans were given the choice of the avant and the cabriolet. Rumors abound that the plans could quite possibly be changing, but nobody seems willing to pin down anything definite. Audi History
Audi can be traced all the way back to August Horch in 1899. Horch was a car producer who wanted to use his family name on his vehicles but in 1909 he was muscled out of the company that he had started. He started a new company but he was forced to use a new name and a new logo. Horch called upon Franz Fikentscher to help him decide on his new company's name and logo, but it was actually Fikentscher's son who came up with the name. It was the son who pointed out that the name Horch could be translated to Audi in Latin and that is how the company got its name. The logo did not come until World War II when Audi merged with a few other companies to form Auto Union. Auto Union used the four inter-locking rings to represent the four companies that had merged to form the single entity.
Currently Audi holds some World Records including Top Speed Endurance. The company has become increasingly popular and is considered to be one of the best cars on the road today. It is certainly a "higher end" (to borrow a retail term) automobile and the 2008 Audi RS4 has a starting MSRP of $66,910 (price quoted by the USA Audi website).
2008 Audi RS4 Specifications and Features
The 2008 Audi RS4 has a ton of features and standard specifications that help stand it out from the other automobiles on the road. Safety
The Audi RS4 is a very safe car. The brakes are ventilated to provide fade resistance which has a better braking performance than other types of brakes. There are eight-piston calipers on the front wheels and single-piston calipers at the back wheels which help to improve the car's braking response. The Audi RS4 also makes use of Quattro®. It is the first Audi model that uses Quattro®. This is one of the defining characteristics of the Audi RS4 and helps to move the power of the vehicle towards the back (giving the car a 40/60 split) which helps the car to handle corners more effectively. The seat belts are three pointed and the car comes with an automatic reminder to make sure that all passengers have their seat belts fastened. There are also head restraints, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters that are built into the front seats.
Of course the Audi RS4 also has airbags. The driver and front-seat passenger have full sized airbags to protect them. These airbags have to stages to their inflation. There are also airbags for the front knees and the sides. Drivers can choose to also have rear side airbags installed to make sure that everybody gets the protection that they need.
Design
The Audi RS4 has been given a design that makes it look like it is moving even when it is sitting perfectly still. It has been given sleek lines that curve from the front grille all the way to the spoiler. The car has an aggressive and almost predatory look, which matches the feel of its engine and performance. The Audi RS4 comes with an optional Titanium package that includes nineteen inch wheels and performance tires. The trim is made of carbon fiber; the tail pipe has been designed in a wide oval shape that is unique to the RS4.

No one doubts that all-wheel drive gives you the best possible vehicle control when you're driving in elemental weather. Whether you're dealing with flood, snow, or sand, dropping engine torque as low as it can go and having four tires working together instead of two improves traction no matter what you drive, but new technology soon to be appearing as a feature of the performance car of your choice takes all-wheel drive one step further. It's called "torque vectoring," and it's a system that enables the instantaneous and seamless distribution of torque to one specific wheel at a time.
Most recent-model all-wheel drive vehicles (cars and SUVs) already come with some kind of computer-managed system in order to boost fuel efficiency. The onboard computer will sense a wheel that might be straying from the intended path, or rotating faster than it should, and it will engage the opposite drive axle and apply torque as a corrective measure. If that isn't enough, engine torque will be reduced, or brakes applied until the problem is solved.
More recently, however, this technology has been vastly improved. Car manufacturers have re-designed both front and rear differentials to make it possible for the engine's torque to be vectored, or passed to each corner of the car. Put simply, traditional torque distribution systems in all-wheel drive cars can transfer engine torque only from the front axle to the rear axle and back, but with torque vectoring, it can be distributed from right to left, as well. An article in Popular Mechanics compared the technology to having "â€¦computer-controlled, super-speed limited slip differential in each axle." What this means is that vehicles will not only handle extremely well in bad driving conditions, but will offer impressive handling in normal conditions as well.
So, where can this technology be found? Look to Acura, Mitsubishi, and BMW for the most refined versions. Acura has offered a version of torque vectoring in it's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system for several years. The system monitors vehicle speed, gear position, steering angle, wheel speed, yaw rate and lateral G forces as well as a number of other types of data, and automatically adds torque to the outside rear wheel during cornering, for smoother, more stable turns. The system includes a set of electromagnetic clutches in the rear differential to handle lateral torque transfers, and while the default distribution is 90% to the front / 10% to the rear, it will automatically change to a 50/50 split on hard turns and acceleration.
Mitsubishi, which was long been a pioneer when it comes to torque vectoring specifically and traction control in general offers a system similar to Acura's. Known as "Active Yaw Control" it's been part of the rear axle of their Evolution performance sedan since the late 1990s, while Audi and BMW are taking the technology further: Acura's system only works on the real axle of a vehicle that normally uses front-wheel drive, but these two makers are using technology from British automotive supplier Ricardo and German supplier ZF that can distribute torque to all four tires at once.
Ricardo's system, found in the Audi A4 and A5, uses wet clutches and planetary gearsets, as well as electromechanical controls to offer a response time of 0.1 seconds from accelerator push to delivery of up to 90% of available torque, and passes it both front to back and side to side with lightning-fast accuracy. The German system used by BMW has branded their system "VectorDrive" and it can pass torque to each of the rear wheels individually, for improved cornering and excellent stability in less-than-excellent driving conditions.
While torque vectoring is not yet an industry standard, it is growing in use, and, when married to existing systems like anti-lock braking and rollover prevention, will eventually give every driver the ability to drive safely through wind, snow, rain, and sleetâ€¦not to mention sunshine and dry roads.

Audi AG, the luxury car arm of Volkswagen AG, announced last Thursday that its global sales increased 5.3 percent in October compared with the same month in 2006.
The Ingolstadt-based maker of Audi 900 parts as well as iconic cars such as the TT and A4, among others, said that it sold 76,900 cars last month, up from the 73,050 it sold in October last year.
That put the company on course to surpass its goal of selling 950,000 cars by the end of the year, said Ralph Weyler, who oversees marketing and sales at the company. "Owing to last month's results, we are extremely confident about the final months of 2007," he added. In the January-October period, the German automaker sold 818,200 cars globally. The number is up eight percent from the 757,763 it sold in the first ten months of 2006.
Demand was strong in the United States, where sales rose 15.4 percent in October with 7,421 cars sold, while demand in Britain pushed sales higher by 12.8 percent to 7,066. In Germany, its home market, Audi sold 23,742 cars last month, up 5.5 percent from last year, reported International Herald Tribune.
Based on the report, the biggest increase of the automaker came in Asia and the Pacific where it sold 10,100 cars, up 17.9 percent from a year ago. China itself saw an increase of 24.8 percent. So far, the company has sold 83,863 cars in China, including Hong Kong. "We are aiming to sell more than 100,000 vehicles in China this year," Weyler said.
Audi has really gone a long way. It has evolved from Auto Union, NSU, Horch and DKW, the former having integrated the historic Audi company which was founded in 1910. At present, the German automaker is etching an indelible line in the global auto competition.
Earlier, the automaker has started offering a computerized control system for its product lines called Multi Media Interface (MMI). The feature arrives in the midst of BMW's iDrive control criticism. The iDrive control, in essence, is a rotating control knob designed to control satellite navigation, radio, TV, heating and car controls with a screen. MMI has been broadly reported to be a significant enhancement on BMW's iDrive.
MMI has been generally well-accepted. The reason: The MMI requires less menu-surfing with its mass of buttons around a central knob, with shortcuts to the radio or phone functions. The screen, either colour or monochrome, is mounted on the upright dashboard, and on the A6 and A8, the controls are mounted horizontally. Meanwhile, an "MMI Like" system is also available on the Audi A3 and A4 product lines which offer the optional Navigation System.
Shares of the automaker were up approximately 3.2 percent to â,¬743 (US$1,089.68) in Frankfurt.

There are several ways of constructing Audi wheels. Most alloy wheels are manufactured in one, two or three piece construction types. They are usually welded or bolted together. Made in three separate pieces, three piece wheels have the center, inside rim half, and outside rim half.
